About Matthew Overton

Thanks for visiting my Portfolio.

My name is Matthew Overton, I am an Australian born, self taught artist aspiring to develop a career in Character Concept and Illustration. I was born into a small country town which didn't really value the fine arts. I was told growing up by my seniors that I would need to path into a science or a labouring job, but deep down I wished to create Artworks that gleamed in uniqueness and creativity.

I was always a fan of video games, Final Fantasy mostly progressed my ebbing video game love into what it is today. Nobuo Uematsu and Tetsuya Nomura largely impacted and honed my artistic love due to their distinct ability to channel otherworldly environments through Music and Art. Without them ever knowing, I am forever grateful for their artistry.

My work generally explores the ideas of Mythology or Eastern styles, thus my Manga styled artworks. I have always grown as an artist by challenging my ideas and views on what defines my art. I often switch my concept thoughts and the meaning for my artworks quite often, allowing myself to develop a variety of concepts. Throughout self study, as well as Secondary school study, I was fascinated with the Idea of Character Concept as it was a major influence in my artworks. I drew most of my influence from Riot Games and the amazing artwork created by the team there which helped me channel my artistic creativity and develop what constraints would be placed upon myself when creating these works.

As well as Riot Games' art, Frida Kahlo was a major influence for me as she was often presented as someone who didn't seem to acknowledge or understand that their artworks were quite good, with some refinement. I feel like I have also been through this kind of dilemma as I never saw my art at a level high enough to try to chase my dream of becoming a concept artist. Thankfully, as I have developed and my skills have grown, I feel as though I am at a place in my artistic career where I can chase those dreams.

For schooling work experience I was lucky enough to get placement at the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art in Melbourne, which was one of the most thrilling and eye opening experiences of my life and I am forever grateful for the time I spent there.

I hope those viewing my artworks enjoy my story, how I have come to be where I am at and I hope you follow my journey into the future of becoming the concept artist I aspire to become.
